Thakur Panchanan Mahila Mahavidyalaya the name speaks for itself; this heritage institution had a history of its own. The Name of the institution denotes the noble personality of Ray Saheb Thakur Panchanan Barma, the enlightened person among the indigenous people of the erstwhile Princely State of Cooch Behar (during the Pre-Independence Period).

Thakur Panchanan Mahila Mahavidyalaya is the only girls’ college in the district of Cooch Behar, West Bengal. It was established on the 18th day of September, 1981. At the time of establishment the college was affiliated under the University of North Bengal. But now w.e.f. July 31, 2015, now the institution is under the affiliation of Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma umiversity. Initially the college started with a few students at Sunity Academy, the Government School for Girls. It was shifted to a semi permanent structure near Rajbari Campus on 2nd July, 1982. The foundation stone of the present college building at the new site was laid by respected Jyoti Basu, the then Honorable Chief Minister, Government of West Bengal on 2nd December, 1997. The inaugural ceremony of the newly constructed college building is being held on the auspicious 25th Boishakh, Rabindra Nath Tagore’s birthday, 9th May, 1999. Late Kamal Guha, the renowned social worker and former MIC, Department of Agriculture, Government of West Bengal was one of the founder members who extended his whole hearted cooperation towards the establishment of Thakur Panchanan Mahila Mahavidyalaya, the only girls’ college in the district

The college obtained UGC’s recognition under section 2 (F) and 12 (B) in December 1993 and was accredited in 2004 by NAAC and was awarded C+ Certificate. The college is the first in the district to undergo the process of Accreditation

The college offers only BA Honours and General Course only with the subject option of BA Honours in Bengali, English, Education, Geography, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Sanskrit and BA General in Bengali, English, Economics, Education, Geography, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Sanskrit and Sociology.

A computer laboratory with 26 computers has been opened for the students of Computer Application Course. A gym is opened with UGC’s grant. NCC and NSS Units of the college are running successfully.

Thakur Panchanan Mahila Mahavidyalaya is trying to promote universal and equitable access to education and developing in the students the knowledge, confidence and requisite skills to become the life-long learners and competitions in a dynamic global marketplace
